Chocolate…Yes or No?

 Unprocessed chocolate contains high concentrations of cocoa flavonols. These flavonols can decrease blood pressure as well as improve the health of existing blood vessels which is a real plus for patients with heart disease. Besides being an anti-inflammatory agent it also raises the level of serotonin in the brain and can also act as an anti-depressant by promoting a sense of well being. To top it off, the chemical compound of chocolate has also been found to give some protection against the UV radiation of the sun. So sit back and enjoy a piece of high quality dark chocolate. Moderation is the key.

Sweat This…

    sweat, perspiration, stress, exerciseHow many times have you heard one of these expressions “Don’t Sweat It” or “No Sweat” or “I’m Sweating Bullets”. What is sweat and why are we so conscious of it?  Sweat is just the more commonly used term for perspiration. We eliminate salty water through the pores of our sweat glands. The body is said to have at least 2 to 4 million of these glands. A good majority of them are found under the arms, feet and palms of our hands. Although it is said that women have more sweat glands then men, the sweat glands in men are up to 40% more active. sweat, perspiration, exercise, stressThis may be because women are better at regulating their body temperatures. Sweat glands are essential for keeping the body cool and most of them are not fully developed until we reach puberty. How much we sweat has a lot to do with the amount of sweat glands we are born with. Since sweating is an autonomic nervous response we really have no control over it. The body does not recognize the difference between releasing sweat whether it be through exercise, anger, nervousness, embarrassment, fear, medication, fever or a host of other causes. However prolonged sweating due to excessive exercise or very hot temperatures can result in dehydration and the loss of electrolytes. sweat,perspiration, exercise, stressMost living creatures sweat. Cows, cats and dogs do it through their paws and nose or by panting. Pigs and Hippos roll in mud to control body temperature. Although it is an extremely healthy function of the body it can also be very unpleasant at close range to someone who is profusely sweating. Most of our sweat is salty water but the unpleasant odor is caused by the release of the breakdown of the proteins we have ingested. This breakdown will cause uric acid as well as ammonia to also be released. When these chemicals are mixed with the bacteria which is lying on the surface of the skin an unpleasant odor can occur.
